This edition of Otolaryngologic Clinics focuses on all aspects of robotic-assisted surgery in Otolaryngology including current, well-accepted techniques as well as emerging applications of the technology. Interest in TORS has increased dramatically as other applications of robotic surgery are explored including robotic-assisted approaches to the thyroid, anterior skull base, and neck. Each article in this edition of Oto Clinics highlights a specific application of robotic surgery in Otolaryngology and includes a detailed step-by-step approach with associated online videos. In depth discussion of indications, complications, and technical pearls accompany each article. TORS for Tonsil cancer; Base of tongue Cancer; Larynx cancer; Sleep apnea; Parapharyngeal spcae; and Benign lesions of the pharynx is presented along with Robotic approaches to anterior skull base and thyroid, Transaxillary robotic thyroidectomy; Transfacial robotic thyroidectomy; and Robotic approaches to the neck.

Robotic Surgery in Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery demonstrates the advantages of robotic surgery, providing guidance on accessing parts of the head and neck which are difficult to visualise, and are manually inaccessible to the surgeon. The book is divided into thirteen chapters across four sections. The first section covers transoral robotic surgery (TORS), a procedure to remove oral cancers whereby a surgeon uses a sophisticated, computer-enhanced system to guide the surgical tools (mayoclinic.org). The second section provides information on robotic thyroid surgery. The third section covers head and neck reconstruction using TORS and the final section discusses forms of robotic surgery currently in development. Robotic Surgery in Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery is a forward-thinking book, written by leading practitioners and edited by US based specialist Nilesh R Vasan from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Centre. With nearly 200 full colour images and illustrations, including many diagrams, this is an invaluable guide to current and future technologies in robotic surgery for otolaryngologists, and head and neck surgeons. We live in an era of increasing availability of highly technological tools that allow for reducing, where possible, the invasiveness of the surgical procedures needed to remove cancer. Also in the head and neck area, transoral procedures increasingly replace the traditional, more invasive, open access procedures. Crucial developments promoting this evolution were the popularization of transoral laser microsurgery and, more recently, transoral robotic approaches. It is logical to expect that these approaches will entail better function for the patients, and thus better quality of life, provided that the obtained oncological radicality is the same or better than that obtained with the more invasive procedures of the past. All these “logical” assumptions still need confirmation and validation on large and independent series, however. This eBook collects the results of some of the most recent research efforts in this field. It contains studies aimed at advancing surgical technology and oncological philosophy, as well as studies assessing the oncological as well as the functional outcome following the application of these techniques. In this way this e-book aims at critically assessing and, where justified, boosting the development and popularization of these transoral approaches. The overall aim is evidently to improve both the oncological as well as the functional outcomes for the patient with laryngeal cancer.

This open access book discusses the most current issues in head and neck cancer with a focus on current trends such as biomarkers, precision medicine and immunotherapy. New approaches in the diagnosis such as liquid biopsies and imaging biomarkers to predict radiotherapy toxicity as well as approaches in the surgical management of head and neck cancers are discussed. The book discusses medical and surgical approaches in both primary, recurrent and metastatic disease and also covers approaches for rare head neck cancers. Readers will learn about the latest drug developments and epidemiological aspects in cancers ranging from Head and Neck Squamous Cell Cancer to Nasopharynx cancer. Edited by a team of world leaders in Head and Neck Cancer, this volume serves as an easy reference to the head and neck oncology practitioner and provides a contemporary overview for specialists the field. The chapters are based on the latest data presented at the 7th Trends in Head and Neck Oncology Conference and reflect the most up-to-date information in the field.
